International Missions

In Matthew 25, Jesus says: “In as much as you did it for one of the least of these my brothers, you did it for me.” Jesus is clear that sometimes it is more important to show his love than to talk about it. There are a number of directions that God has led the People of Peace, both locally and internationally, in which we primarily focus on showing the love of God in the Name of Jesus.

INTERNATIONALLY, the story of Missions begins with our 25th Anniversary as a congregation in 1984. We received a 25th Anniversary Thank Offering designed to get our people more hands-on involved with Missions. For the first two years we went with another church in the area who had been going to Honduras, in Central America for several years. Then we branched out to begin focusing on meeting Optical and Dental needs. The summer of 2012 will be 26 years ago that this Mission to Honduras began. This summer the Optical Mission Trip will be July 5-12 and the Dental Mission Trip will be July 12-19. God continues to bless us so that we can be a blessing to the people of Honduras.

The next place God called us to serve was in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Our High School Youth began a Mission Partnership with Cristo El Salvador Lutheran Church. Over almost 20 years, our youth and the adult that accompany them have been active on both sides of the river, even helping to establish a new Lutheran Church in Acuna. They actually built the first unit for this church, and followed with the construction of their first sanctuary where they currently worship. They have built homes on both sides of the river, done Vacation Bible School, and worked with as orphanage in Acuna. It was ten years ago that we began a relationship with Mission India, serving in India which is literally on the other side of the world. Our involvement has been primarily to support the work of Mission India in three area. The Mission India belief is that the only way to reach India for Christ is through indigenous Asia Indian people. We therefore support this Mission by enabling them to do a two year training program for Church Planters. It is amazing that each of the Church Planters during their two years will make at least 1200 contacts to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. That is 600 per year, and 50 contacts per month to share Jesus with many who are hearing this incredible Good News for the first time. With a population in India that is 50% illiterate, we also support literacy training, which enables an individual to get a better job and improve their health and family living situation..The third area of focus for this mission is on children. We support the Children’s Bible Clubs, which share the Good News of Jesus with thousands of children. They learn stories about Jesus, and songs about Jesus, and they leave to share the love of Jesus. It is the other side of the world, but it is great to be making a difference in the Name of Christ.

Worship in Sudan by Pastor Wichieng T. Wetnyangran

To the members of Peace Lutheran Church:

Reaching out to the lost is not as easy as it was in the past, but with God’s help and guidance we do it unbelievably. God commands us to teach and share the good news with many (all nations) as He says, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always to the very end of the age.” (Matthews 28:18-20)

This indeed tells us what we can do to reach out and make known His love to the world. We can do it through prayers, and we can do it by visiting them and sharing the good news of Jesus, and we can also do it by supporting them with something that can last for many years like a church building with a metal roof where they can worship the Lord our God at peace.

You can see in the picture the children’s Sunday school being led by one of the Evangelist while they were sitting under a tree, and they are very happy doing it. But if it rains, they will cancel that and leave for shelter. If they have building where they can worship the Lord knowing that even if it rains they will still come and continue with their worship; I believe they will not stop coming because of the rain.

With God’s love for us, He calls us friend so we can call those who share the same beliefs friends. God’s word says it clearly to us all, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16).

This Word reminds us that we can do something for others with whom we share the same faith. I ask for your prayers and for your support to reach and support the mission work in Sudan. There are many Evangelical Lutheran Churches of Sudan which have the same conditions. Those who receive support and our prayers will praise the Lord and thank Him for the gifts given to them which they did not deserve to have. Thank you for investing your lives to serve God by serving others.
Jesus says, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35)

Mission India

Peace has supported Mission India for ten years now.  Mission India exists for one reason: to transform India by the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  The entire ministry is about training and equipping indigenous Indian Christians to do this ministry.  The process has three parts: Children's Bible Clubs (similar to our VBS, except they last two weeks and could happen anywhere), Adult Literacy Program, and Church Planting Program.  Most of our support has gone toward Church Planting, though we have supported the other two to a lesser extent.  There are ten people in every church planting class Mission India does.  Each class lasts two years.  During those two years, each church planter must make 1,200 gospel contacts with people or families that don't know, or haven't accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior.  By the end of the class they must have planted two churches.  One of our classes of ten church planters planted 48 churches in their two years!  All of our offerings given on Wednesday in Advent and Lent go to Mission India (except December 1st, which goes to the mission in Turkey).
