Christian Care Ministry

"A new command I give you:
Love one another."
~ Jesus

"One Another." Did you know that this phrase “one another" shows up over 100 times in the New Testament? It’s all over the place. It’s unfortunate that most of our Bibles do not even give a listing in their concordance for “another,” because it’s an extremely important part of living together in the promises of God!

This page is designed to encourage and equip you to care for your fellow travelers on the journey of faith. Too often, we expect “official groups” or “official people” to do all that church stuff like praying with someone when they are hurting, visiting someone and sharing God’s Word with them when they are hospitalized or sick at home, or bringing someone a meal when times are tough. But this is exactly what God has baptized all of us to do – to care for one another, encourage one another, and build up one another in the body of Christ. For this reason, we strongly encourage you to invest yourselves in some key relationships with about 3-5 other disciples on the journey of faith. This will become your “rope” – the people to whom you are linked on the journey, standing firm for one another.

If, in the midst of your caring you need a pastor or ministry staff person, we would be glad to come alongside you – just give us a call. Or, if you have a prayer request for the prayer chain or for worship, you can send it into the office right here or simply call the church office.

On this page are many resources for helping you to live "one-another" lives in the strength of Jesus’ Spirit. When someone you know needs care, come check out this page. When someone you know needs help, come check out this page. When someone God has placed in your life faces a challenge, come check out this page…and then go care for them in the grace and the power of Christ!

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit,
which is the word of God.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions
with all kinds of prayers and requests.
With this in mind, be alert and
always keep on praying for all the saints.
Ephesians 6:17-18 (NIV)

Christian Care Discipleship Resources

Often times we don’t care for others because we don’t know what to say. But, this isn’t an excuse for not caring – it’s a reason for persevering and trusting God to use us, scared and feeble as we may be, to do his work (like the little boy with the five loaves of bread and two fish). This doesn’t mean preparation is not involved.

To the right are some resources for being ready to live out these "one-another" lives. You will notice that the first one is about discovering and better knowing your Personal Faith Story and how God has shown up in your life. This is an integral and on-going part of your intentional discipleship journey. It’s also integral to you caring in a genuine and personal way for others on this journey. Take the time to know your story.

Throughout our building you will also find pamphlets on all kinds of different topics from Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) The link to the right will show you a list of all the topics they offer.  We don't have every pamphlet at Peace, but we have a lot.  Please feel to take whatever you need, or you can order one from LHM directly if we don't have what you are looking for.  Also, if you have a business, you can contact LHM about providing the pamphlets at your place of business as an outreach to the community. If you put Peace’s information in the front or back of each pamphlet, then it also connects them to God’s people in this place.  Click the link to find out more.

We also invite you to listen to some sermons on this important part of living out our faith.  These links don't work just yet, but come back soon and we will hopefully have them for you.

The Lutheran Study Bible - As always, this is your source of life as God reveals Himself to you, so it will be the source of life you share with others as you care for them.

The Lutheran Service Book - Paul tells the believers in Colossae, "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God (Colossians 3:16)."  Don't be afraid to sing hymns and spiritual songs with your friends when you are caring for them.  It will fill their spirit with strength and joy.

For the Faint of Heart - This is a great little book to give when somone is asking big questions about God, their life, and the relationship between the two.  Not overwhelming, it simply gets to the heart of these deep questions by beginning to address them with God's word of promise.  We have free copies on the bookshelf across from Pastor Wiechman's office.

Scripture Reference Books - All of these books (Quick Scripture Reference and the Touchpoints) come with a warning: These can help you find a place in the story of God's love-letter to us, but you must use them with care.  While it might be good to look up some verses dealing with anger, or fear, or coveting..., we must be careful not to take God's Word out of context - out of the bigger story.  Use these reference books to help you find the specific episode, and then read the larger context.  Then, go share the love-letter of God with whomever He has placed in your life!

MUSIC: Music touches the deep places of our souls.  When someone is hurting or sick, music can often be the best way to care for them.  Whether singing together, or leaving a CD with music on it, the comfort of another human voice or instruments bringing the promises of God into our pain is powerful.  Before you go visit a friend in need, think about finding a song or two and rip them to a CD to take with you.  Here are a few to get you started.

In sickness, sorrow, want, or care,
Each other's burdens help us share;
May we, where help is needed, there
Give help as though to you.

O God of Mercy, God of Light [LW397, v. 5]

The Christian Care Team - click here to get involved

The Christian Care Ministry does not intend to do all the caring for all of the people of Peace. Instead, it is designed to come alongside all of the members caring for one another, and to support this care, especially to those who are unable to make it to worship or are experiencing great turmoil, grief or change. The Christian Care Ministry is made up of six different teams:

  • VISITATION TEAM: men and women committed to visiting people in the hospital to pray with them, to share God’s Word with them, and to care for them. We also have a smaller team of primarily men, but also some couples, who visit our long-term shut-ins to bring the Lord’s Supper on a regular basis, while also praying, sharing God’s Word, and caring for them.
  • CARD TEAM: men and women committed to writing encouraging notes to those prayed for over the weekend, and also to our shut-ins.
  • PRAYER CHAIN: men and women committed to receiving prayer requests throughout the week and lifting up these prayers to the throne of our almighty God on a regular basis.
  • HELPING HANDS: men and women committed to being on a call list for preparing a meal, often on short notice. These meals are often provided to Peace families that are experiencing great change or grief (at a death, a birth, job loss, hospitalization, etc.).
  • FUNERAL MEALS: men and women committed to being on stand-by for preparing and serving a meal to family and friends surrounding the memorial/funeral service.
  • PHONE TEAM: men and women committed to regularly calling our shut-ins to talk with them, pray with them and care for them.
